INTRODUCTION: The biosynthesis of tumor-associated sialoglycans involves Sialyltransferases expressed in cancer cells differentially. The current review aspires to bridge the existing knowledge gaps by consolidating evidence regarding the role of Sialyltransferases in gynecological malignant tumors (ovarian, cervix, endometrial, and breast). METHODS: In this systematic review, we searched databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library. Twenty-two high-quality articles were selected out of 559 researched studies using radiomics quality score (RQS) tools. RESULTS: Our findings indicated that 7 articles were related to Sialyltransferases in ovarian cancer, in which 6 studies was examined only ST6Gal-I and one study examined the ST3Gal-I, ST3Gal-II, ST3Gal-III, ST3Gal-IV, ST3Gal-VI, and ST3Gal-6. In addition, 5 articles were related to Sialyltransferases in cervix cancer (ST6Gal-I), 3 articles to endometrial cancer (ST6Gal-I, ST3Gal-III, ST3Gal-IV, and ST3Gal-6), and 7 articles to breast cancer (ST6Gal-I gene in 5 studies, ST6GAL-II gene in one study, and ST8SIA1 and ST3GAL-V genes in one study). CONCLUSION: ST6Gal-I gene expression occurs at a high speed in ovarian, cervix, endometrial, and breast cancers, leading to metastasis to distant cells, cell destruction, cell invasion, and reduced patient survival.

AIM: This study assessed the myocardial infarction (MI) using a novel fusion approach (multi-flavored or tensor-based) of multi-parametric cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) at four sequences; T1-weighted (T1W) in the axial plane, sense-balanced turbo field echo (sBTFE) in the axial plane, late gadolinium enhancement of heart short axis (LGE-SA) in the sagittal plane, and four-chamber views of LGE (LGE-4CH) in the axial plane. METHODS: After considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 115 patients (83 with MI diagnosis and 32 as healthy control patients), were included in the present study. Radiomic features were extracted from the whole left ventricular myocardium (LVM). Feature selection methods were Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (Lasso), Minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance (MRMR), Chi-Square (Chi2), Analysis of Variance (Anova), Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), and SelectPersentile. The classification methods were Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), and Random Forest (RF). Different metrics, including receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, F1- score, precision, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated for radiomic features extracted from CMR images using stratified five-fold cross-validation. RESULTS: For the MI detection, Lasso (as the feature selection) and RF/LR (as the classifiers) in sBTFE sequences had the best performance (AUC: 0.97). All features and classifiers of T1 + sBTFE sequences with the weighted method (as the fused image), had a good performance (AUC: 0.97). In addition, the results of the evaluated metrics, especially mean AUC and accuracy for all models, determined that the T1 + sBTFE-weighted fused method had strong predictive performance (AUC: 0.93±0.05; accuracy: 0.93±0.04), followed by T1 + sBTFE-PCA fused method (AUC: 0.85±0.06; accuracy: 0.84±0.06). CONCLUSION: Our selected CMRI sequences demonstrated that radiomics analysis enables to detection of MI accurately. Among the investigated sequences, the T1 + sBTFE-weighted fused method with the highest AUC and accuracy values was chosen as the best technique for MI detection.

INTRODUCTION: Although cancer treatment with cisplatin is effective, dose-dependent adverse effects such as ototoxicity occurs often, which limits its clinical use. The use of resveratrol may alleviate the cisplatin-induced ototoxic effects. This study is aimed to review the potential otoprotective effects of resveratrol against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. METHOD: According to the PRISMA guideline, a systematic search was accomplished to identify all relevant scientific papers on "the role of resveratrol against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity" in different electronic databases up to May 2021. Fifty-five articles were screened based on a pre-defined set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Eight eligible studies were finally included in the current systematic review. The in-vitro findings revealed that cisplatin administration significantly decreased the HEI-OC1 cell viability compared to the untreated cells; however, resveratrol co-treatment (in a dose-dependent manner) could protect HEI-OC1 cells against cisplatin-induced decrease in cell viability. RESULTS: Furthermore, the in-vivo finding showed a decreased value of DPOAE, and increased values of ABR threshold, ABR-I, ABR-IV, and ABR I-IV interval in cisplatin-treated animals; in contrast, resveratrol co-administration demonstrated an opposite pattern on these parameters. CONCLUSION: Thus, it can be mentioned that resveratrol co-treatment alleviates cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Mechanically, resveratrol exerts its otoprotective effects through various mechanisms such as anti-oxidant, anti-apoptosis, and anti-inflammatory.

Aim: This study purposed to evaluate the modulator and protective role of Urtica dioica (UD) extract against deleterious effects of retinoic acid (RA) high doses on histological parameters and fertilization of rats. Materials and methods: For the in-vivo phase, 60 female Wistar rats were divided into 6 identical groups as 1) control, 2) 25 mg/kg RA, 3) 25 mg/kg UD extract, 4) 50 mg/kg UD extract, 5) UD extract (25 mg/kg) + RA (25 mg/kg), and 6) UD extract (50 mg/kg) + RA (25 mg/kg). Biochemical parameters, including luteinizing hormone (LH), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) activities, were measured. In the in-vitro phase, oocytes were obtained from 10 female rats without injection. In addition to the mentioned parameters, histological parameters (oocytes in various stages) and the results of IVM, IVF, and embryo developments were assessed and compared among the groups with the use of one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc tests. Results: The high dosage of RA significantly reduced the LH and FSH levels; however, UD alone and with RA increased the hormone levels in rats. Regarding the reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity levels in rats' blood samples, RA increased the MDA and decreased the SOD and CAT levels. Treatment with UD extract (UD + RA groups) significantly improved the parameters mentioned, showing UD's antioxidant effect. The rate of oocyte maturation, 2-cell-4-cell and 4-cell-8-cell embryos, and blastocyst formation increased significantly in the groups in which UD extracts were administered compared to the control and RA groups. Furthermore, the increases were significant in the UD + RA groups compared to the RA group. Conclusion: UD extract can significantly reduce RA high doses side effects on histological parameters and fertilization of rats and has the protective potential against RA deleterious effects.

Background: This study was aimed at determining the effects of alpha-lipoic acid on ionizing irradiation-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis in the brain of rats. Methods: The animals were exposed to whole-brain X-radiation with a 15 Gy single dose in the absence or presence of alpha-lipoic acid (200 mg/kg body weight) pretreatment for one week. The rats were divided into four groups (5 rats in each group): vehicle control, alpha-lipoic acid alone (ALA), radiation alone (RAD), and radiation plus alpha-lipoic acid (RAD+ALA). In the next stage, malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the brain tissue of the rats were measured. Furthermore, the Western blot analysis technique was performed to assess the NOX2, NOX4, and caspase-3 protein expression levels. Results: Twenty-four hours after the irradiation, MDA and nitric oxide levels in the irradiated rats were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.001); however, the pretreatment with alpha-lipoic acid resulted in a significant reduction in these stress oxidative markers (p < 0.05). Moreover, a significant decrease in CAT, SOD, and GPx levels was observed in the radiation group alone compared to the control group (p < 0.01); in contrast, the activities of these antioxidant enzymes significantly increased in the radiation plus alpha-lipoic acid group in comparison to the radiation group alone (p < 0.05). The results of Western blot analysis revealed that NOX2, NOX4, and caspase-3 protein expressions significantly elevated in the irradiated rats compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The pretreatment with alpha-lipoic acid could significantly decrease the expression levels of NOX2, NOX4, and caspase-3 in comparison with the radiation group alone (p < 0.05). Conclusion: According to the obtained findings, it can be mentioned that the alpha-lipoic acid pretreatment could mitigate the ionizing irradiation-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis in the brain of the rats.

The reproductive system is extremely vulnerable to chemotherapy drugs, ionizing radiation, toxic heavy metals, chemicals, and so on. These harmful stimuli are able to induce oxidative damage, apoptosis, inflammation, and other mechanisms in the reproductive organs, leading to different adverse reproductive effects. It was shown that using medicinal plants (medicinal herbs) can be an effective medication for the prevention and treatment of multiple health conditions. Silymarin is a medicinal herb extract, obtained from the seeds of Silybum marianum. This herbal agent is a nontoxic agent even at relatively high physiological dose values, which suggests that it is safe for use in the treatment of different diseases. The hepato-, neuro-, cardio- and nephro-protective effects of silymarin have been assessed previously. The protective activities of silymarin can point to anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic, immunomodulatory, and membrane-stabilizing properties. In this review, we aim to summarize current studies on the protective potentials of silymarin against reproductive toxicity. The molecular mechanisms of silymarin protection against cellular toxicity are also studied. Moreover, the findings obtained from improved formulations and delivery systems of silymarin have been addressed.

Introduction: EGSnrc software package is one of the computational packages for Monte Carlo simulation in radiation therapy and has several subset codes. Directional bremsstrahlung splitting (DBS) is a technique that applies braking radiations in interactions in this software. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of this technique on the simulation time, uncertainty, particle number of phase-space data, and photon beam spectrum resulting from a medical linear accelerator (LINAC). Materials and methods: The gantry of the accelerator, including the materials and geometries of different parts, was simulated using the BEAMnrc code (a subset code in the EGSnrc package). The phase-space data were recorded in different parts of the LINAC. The DBS values (1, 10, 100, and 1000) were changed, and their effects were evaluated on the simulation parameters and output spectra. Results: Increasing the DBS value from 1 to 1000 resulted in an increase in the simulation time from 1.778 to 11.310 hours, and increasing the number of particles in the phase-space plane (5 590 732-180 328 382). When the DBS had been picked up from 1 to 100, the simulation uncertainty decreased by about 1.29%. In addition, the DBS increment value from 100 to 1000 leads to an increase in uncertainty and simulation time of about 0.71% and 315%, respectively. Conclusion: Although using the DBS technique reduces the simulation time or uncertainty, increasing the DBS from a specific value, equal to 100 in our study, increases simulation uncertainties and times. Therefore, we propose considering a specific DBS value as we obtained for the Monte Carlo simulation of photon beams produced by linear accelerators.

Background: Approximately 50% of dental amalgam is elemental mercury by weight. Accumulating body of evidence now shows that not only static magnetic fields (SMF) but both ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiations can increase the rate of mercury release from dental amalgam fillings. Iranian scientists firstly addressed this issue in 2008 but more than 10 years later, it became viral worldwide. Objective: This review was aimed at evaluating available data on the magnitude of the effects of different physical stressors (excluding chewing and brushing) on the release of toxic mercury from dental amalgam fillings and microleakage. Material and Methods: The papers reviewed in this study were searched from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus (up to 1 December 2019). The keywords were identified from our initial research matching them with those existing on the database of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). The non-English papers and other types of articles were not included in this review. Results: Our review shows that exposure to static magnetic fields (SMF) such as those generated by MRI, electromagnetic fields (EMF) such as those produced by mobile phones; ionizing electromagnetic radiations such as X-rays and non- Ionizing electromagnetic radiation such as lasers and light cure devices can significantly increase the release of mercury from dental amalgam restorations and/or cause microleakage. Conclusion: The results of this review show that a wide variety of physical stressors ranging from non-ionizing electromagnetic fields to ionizing radiations can significantly accelerate the release of mercury from amalgam and cause microleakage.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Computed tomography (CT) is one of the main sources using ionizing radiation. Considering the toxicity from this radiation, any technique that could reduce the radiosensitive organs' doses without affecting the image diagnostic quality must be considered in routine practice. In this study, the amount of eye lens dose reduction in the presence of radioprotective glasses was evaluated in neck CT examinations. METHODS: Thirty adult patients (15 men and 15 women) with a mean age of 44.6 years undergoing neck CT examination participated in this study. For each patient, six thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs-100) were attached above the eye lens glasses surface, and another six under the glasses to assess the radioprotective effect of the glasses. The TLDs were readout and converted to Hp (3) as an indicator of eye lens dose. The obtained results from the TLD readouts as eye lens dose were compared using a paired t-test. RESULTS: The TLD measurements showed the mean±standard deviation values of 2.97±0.61 mGy and 1.04±0.16 mGy for TLDs above and under the radioprotective glasses, respectively. The radioprotective glasses significantly decreased the eye lens dose by about 64.9% (P=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Due to the results, wearing radioprotective glasses for patients during neck CT scans could significantly reduce the eye lens doses. RELEVANCE FOR PATIENTS: The outcome of this research shows that leaded glasses can decrease the received dose significantly in patient during neck CT scans.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is a routine procedure for diagnosing using ionization radiation which has hazardous effects especially on sensitive organs. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to quantify the dose reduction effect of lead apron shielding on the testicular region during routine chest CT scans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this measurement study, the routine chest CT examinations were performed for 30 male patients with common lead aprons folded and positioned in testis regions. The patient's mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.2 ± 4.6 kg/m2. To calculate the doses at testis region, three thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD-100) were attached at the top surface of the apron as an indicator of the doses without shielding, and three TLDs under the apron for doses with shielding. The TLD readouts were compared using SPSS software (Wilcoxon test) version 16. RESULTS: The radiation dose in the testicular regions was reduced from 0.46 ± 0.04 to 0.20 ± 0.04 mGy in the presence of lead apron shielding (p < 0.001), the reduction was equal to 56%. Furthermore, the heritable risk probability was obtained at 2.0 ×10-5 % and 4.6 ×10-5 % for the patients using the lead apron shield versus without shield, respectively. CONCLUSION: Applying common lead aprons as shielding in the testis regions of male patients undergoing chest CT scans can reduce the radiation doses significantly. Therefore, this shield can be recommended for routine chest CT examinations.

This study was conducted to determine first local diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and achievable doses (ADs) for pediatric patients during the most common computed tomography (CT) procedures in Yazd province. The DRL was obtained based on volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) for four various age groups of children. Data were collected from the most commonly performed pediatric CT scans, including abdomen-pelvis, chest, brain and sinus examinations, at six high-loaded institutes. The patients' data (766 no.) in terms of CTDIvol and DLP were obtained from four age groups: ≤1-, 1-5-, 5-10- and 10-15-y-old. The 75th percentiles of CTDIvol and DLP were considered as DRL values and the 50th percentiles were described as ADs for those parameters. Consequently, the acquired DRLs were compared with other national and international published values. The DRLs in terms of CTDIvol for abdomen-pelvis, chest, brain and sinus examinations were 3, 8, 9 and 10 mGy; 4, 5, 5 and 5 mGy; 25, 28, 29 and 38 mGy; and 23, 24, 26 and 27 mGy for four different age groups of ≤1-, 1-5-, 5-10- and 10-15-y-old, respectively. The DRL values in terms of DLP were 75, 302, 321 and 342 mGy.cm; 109, 112, 135 and 170 mGy.cm, 352, 355, 360 and 481 mGy.cm; and 206, 211, 228 and 245 mGy.cm, respectively, for the mentioned age groups. In this study, the DRL and AD values in the brain examination were greater among the other studied regions. The DRL plays a critical role in the optimization of radiation doses delivered to patients and in improving their protection. This study provides the local DRLs and ADs for the most common pediatric CT scanning in Yazd province to create optimum situation for the clinical practice.

PURPOSE: Pneumonitis and lung fibrosis, as the most common compliances of lung irradiation, can affect the quality of life. The use of radio-protective agents can ameliorate these injuries. This study aimed to review the potential protective role of melatonin in the treatment of radiation-induced Pneumonitis and lung fibrosis. METHODS: The current systematic study was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines to identify relevant literature on " the effect of melatonin on radiation-induced pneumonitis and lung fibrosis" in the electronic databases of Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus up to January 2021. Eighty-one articles were screened in accordance with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. Finally, eight articles were included in this systematic review. RESULTS: The finding showed that the lung irradiation-induced pneumonitis and lung fibrosis. The co-treatment with melatonin could alleviate these compliances through its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Melatonin through upregulation of some enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, NADPH oxidases 2 and 4, dual oxidases 1 and 2, and also downregulation of malondialdehyde reduced oxidative stress following lung radiation. Moreover, melatonin through its anti-inflammatory effects, can attenuate the increased levels of nuclear factor kappa B, tumor necrosis factor alpha, transforming growth factor beta 1, SMAD2, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-4 receptor-a1 (IL4ra1), and IL-1 beta following lung radiation. The histological damages induced by ionizing radiation were also alleviated by co-treatment with melatonin. CONCLUSION: According to the obtained results, it was found that melatonin can have anti-pneumonitis and anti-fibrotic following lung irradiation.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate skin dose differences between TPS (treatment planning system) calculations and TLD (thermo-luminescent dosimeters) measurements along with the dosimetric effect of applicator misplacement for patients diagnosed with gynecological (GYN) cancers undergoing brachytherapy. METHODS: The skin doses were measured using TLDs attached in different locations on patients' skin in pelvic regions (anterior, left, and right) for 20 patients, as well as on a phantom. In addition, the applicator surface dose was calculated with TLDs attached to the applicator. The measured doses were compared with TPS calculations to find TPS accuracy. For the phantom, different applicator shifts were applied to find the effect of applicator misplacement on the surface dose. RESULTS: The mean absolute dose differences between the TPS and TLDs results for anterior, left, and right points were 3.14±1.03, 6.25±1.88, and 6.20±1.97 %, respectively. The mean difference on the applicator surface was obtained 1.92±0.46 %. Applicator misplacements of 0.5, 2, and 4 cm (average of three locations) resulted in 9, 36, and 61%, dose errors respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The surface/skin differences between the calculations and measurements are higher in the left and right regions, which relate to the higher uncertainty of TPS dose calculation in these regions. Furthermore, applicator misplacements can result in high skin dose variations, therefore it can be an appropriate quality assurance method for future research.

OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to apply the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values to quantify the differences between low- and high-grade glioma tumors. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, retrospective study between September to December 2019. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diffusion-weighted images (DWIs), and the pathologic findings of 56 patients with glioma tumors (low grade = 28 and high grade = 28) were assessed to measure the ADC values in the tumor center, tumor edema, boundary area between tumor with normal tissue, and inside the healthy hemisphere. These values were compared between the two groups, and cut-off values were calculated using the receiver operating characteristic curve. RESULTS: We saw significant differences between the mean ADC values measured in the tumor center and edema between high- and low-grade tumors (p< 0.005). The ADC values in the boundary area between tumors with normal tissue and inside healthy hemisphere did not significantly differ in the groups. The ADC values at tumor center and edema were higher than 1.12 × 10-3 mm2/s (sensitivity = 100% and specificity = 96.0%) and 1.15 × 10-3 mm2/s (sensitivity = 75.0% and specificity = 64.0%), respectively, could be classified as low-grade tumors. CONCLUSIONS: The ADC values from the MRI DWIs in the tumor center and edema could be used as an appropriate method for investigating the differences between low- and high-grade glioma tumors. The ADC values in the boundary area and healthy tissues had no diagnostic values in grading the glioma tumors.

PURPOSE: Radiation therapy is one of the main cancer treatment modalities applied in 50-70% of cancer patients. Despite the many advantages of this treatment, such as non-invasiveness, organ-preservation, and spatiotemporal flexibility in tumor targeting, it can lead to complications in irradiated healthy cells/tissues. In this regard, the use of radio-protective agents can alleviate radiation-induced complications. This study aimed to review the potential role of alpha-lipoic acid in the prevention/reduction of radiation-induced toxicities on healthy cells/tissues. METHODS: A systematic search was performed following PRISMA guidelines to identify relevant literature on the "role of alpha-lipoic acid in the treatment of radiotherapy-induced toxicity" in the electronic databases of Web of Science, Embase, PubMed, and Scopus up to January 2021. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the present study, 278 articles were screened. Finally, 29 articles were included in this systematic review. RESULTS: The obtained results showed that in experimental in vivo models, the radiation-treated groups had decreased survival rate and body weight compared to the control groups. It was also found that radiation can induce mild to severe toxicities on gastrointestinal, circulatory, reproductive, central nervous, respiratory, endocrine, exocrine systems, etc. However, the use of alpha-lipoic acid could alleviate the radiation-induced toxicities in most cases. This radio-protective agent exerts its effects through mechanisms of anti-oxidant, anti-apoptosis, anti-inflammatory, and so on. CONCLUSION: According to the obtained results, it can be mentioned that co-treatment of alpha-lipoic acid with radiotherapy ameliorates the radiation-induced toxicities in healthy cells/tissues.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the radio-protective effect of green tea, grape seed, and coffee bean extracts in different oral consumption methods in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental-quantitative study 150 mice in 15 equally sized groups were used. For each extract, two groups received 200 mg/kg of herbal extracts' combination for 7 and 30 consecutive days before irradiation, and one group received 800 mg/kg of the extract 2 h before irradiation (3 Gy gamma-rays of Co-60). The similar groups were classified to receive a combination of the plant extracts (green tea, grape seed, and coffee bean). Irradiation without consuming plant extract (irradiated group), and a control group were also devised. Alkaline comet and micronucleus assays were used to investigate the radioprotective effect on mice blood and bone marrow cells, respectively. RESULTS: Consumption of all plant extracts significantly decreased the radiation damage to blood and bone marrow cells, compared to the irradiated group (p < 0.01), with grape seed extract showing higher protective effect. Continuous daily oral consumption (one week/month) showed a significant higher radioprotective effect compared to single consumption (p < 0.05). Continuous consumption of the combination of the extracts showed a higher radio-protection in comparison to each of the plant extracts (p < 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The radioprotective effect of continuous consumption (for one week/month) of the plant extracts was greater than single dose. In continuous consumption protocols, we found the synergetic property and higher radioprotective effect of the plant extract combination compared to each one.

INTRODUCTION: There are various radioprotective agents with different mechanisms that help to decrease ionizing radiation side effects. The radioprotective effect of Cimetidine and IMOD was assessed individually and compared with the hybrid radioprotectors agents (HRPAs-IMOD and Cimetidine) on human lymphocyte cells. METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers (ten men and ten women) participated in the present study. About 75 mL peripheral blood lymphocytes from each individual were collected, and they were divided into 36 groups. Briefly, the blood samples were treated with different concentrations of Cimetidine (12.6 and 25.2 µg/mL) and IMOD (0.04, 0.08, and 0.12 mg/mL), and also a combination of these agents, namely hybrid radioprotectors agents (HRPAs). Besides, the irradiated groups were exposed to 2 and 4 Gy of Co-60 gamma irradiation. The amount of cellular damage was assessed using the micronucleus assay. The repeated measurements and paired T-test statistical analysis were used to compare the micronucleus frequencies in different groups. RESULTS: The micronucleus frequencies were significantly reduced (p < 0.05) in irradiated groups when the non-toxic concentrations of Cimetidine, IMOD, and HRPAs have been used. The reduction in micronucleus frequency was obtained 5-29% for Cimetidine and 40-51% for IMOD in peripheral blood lymphocytes irradiated with 2 Gy. This reduction in 4 Gy irradiation was 8-17% for Cimetidine and 27-37% for IMOD. The HRPAs resulted in a higher radioprotective effect, in a way that they cause up to 58% and 43% micronucleus frequency reduction in 2 and 4 Gy, respectively. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the HRPAs showed the highest level of radioprotective. In addition, IMOD was remarkably higher radioprotective than Cimetidine, which may be related to its greater non-toxic concentrations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Radiomics has been widely used in quantitative analysis of medical images for disease diagnosis and prognosis assessment. The objective of this study is to test a machine-learning (ML) method based on radiomics features extracted from chest CT images for screening COVID-19 cases. METHODS: The study is carried out on two groups of patients, including 138 patients with confirmed and 140 patients with suspected COVID-19. We focus on distinguishing pneumonia caused by COVID-19 from the suspected cases by segmentation of whole lung volume and extraction of 86 radiomics features. Followed by feature extraction, nine feature-selection procedures are used to identify valuable features. Then, ten ML classifiers are applied to classify and predict COVID-19 cases. Each ML models is trained and tested using a ten-fold cross-validation method. The predictive performance of each ML model is evaluated using the area under the curve (AUC) and accuracy. RESULTS: The range of accuracy and AUC is from 0.32 (recursive feature elimination [RFE]+Multinomial Naive Bayes [MNB] classifier) to 0.984 (RFE+bagging [BAG], RFE+decision tree [DT] classifiers) and 0.27 (mutual information [MI]+MNB classifier) to 0.997 (RFE+k-nearest neighborhood [KNN] classifier), respectively. There is no direct correlation among the number of the selected features, accuracy, and AUC, however, with changes in the number of the selected features, the accuracy and AUC values will change. Feature selection procedure RFE+BAG classifier and RFE+DT classifier achieve the highest prediction accuracy (accuracy: 0.984), followed by MI+Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) and logistic regression (LGR)+DT classifiers (accuracy: 0.976). RFE+KNN classifier as a feature selection procedure achieve the highest AUC (AUC: 0.997), followed by RFE+BAG classifier (AUC: 0.991) and RFE+gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) classifier (AUC: 0.99). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the ML model based on RFE+KNN classifier achieves the highest performance to differentiate patients with a confirmed infection caused by COVID-19 from the suspected cases.

This study aimed to introduce a new method for eye lens thermo-luminescent dosimetry and also estimate the dose associated with induced cancer risk due to the ionizing radiation exposure received by physicians and other staff cooperating in interventional cardiology (IC) procedures. The measurements were performed with six TLDs (thermoluminescent dosimeters): four TLDs for eye lens dosimetry (2 positioned on respiratory/surgical mask under the eye region as the new method; and 2 near the outside border of the eye as the common method) and two TLDs for whole-body dosimetry. Whole-body doses were used to calculate the cancer risks induced by IC procedures. The results of the new proposed method for eye lens dosimetry were similar to common TLD positioning (mean differences <5%) and mask displacement had no significant effect on eye dose measurement in our new method. Our proposed method for eye lens dosimetry is simpler and more comfortable compared to the common method and it can be used as an alternative method without using TLD holders to monitor lens dose for IC workers wearing masks during the procedure. The estimated excess cancer incidence risk induced by IC procedures was 29.58 ± 5.71 and 46.68 ± 7.77 (per 100000 individuals) for men and women, respectively.
